My Story

Growing up I always struggled with the question “ Who do you want to be when you grow up? ” My entire childhood I lived in poverty. I believe this made it hard for me to pick a career. There were so many good paying careers I could of choose from. Any of these careers would have broken the cycle of living in poverty. Yet, none of them called my attention. My parents didn't go to college, nor did they have good careers. My dad wasn’t always around growing up. I didn’t have anyone to look up to for advice. He decided that paying child support was a better fit for him at the time. My mom lived off of disability income and she had to make that work for us. To be clear we are a family of seven. She signed up for every government program for help. They were programs like food stamps, cash assistance, or programs like low income housing. I know we all make mistakes and we live in a non-perfect world. My parents made some poor choices that lead us to become homeless. Being homeless made it hard to stay focused in school. I didn’t have or make a lot of friends. I feel like I missed out on a lot of fun experiences growing up. When graduation came I was lost. I decided not to go to college because we couldn’t afford it. I thought to myself “is this it? Do I just go work for the rest of my life?” Due to what I had been through I didn’t know what I wanted for myself. I just knew I didn’t want to repeat the same mistakes my parents did. I wanted to break the cycle to get out of poverty and give my future kids a better life than the life I had growing up.
